Chelsea: Xabi Alonso tries to reassure Estevão

Having seen very little playing time since the start of the season and been hampered by an injury, Estevão is going through a difficult period at Chelsea.

Asked about Estevão’s situation, Xabi Alonso acknowledged his frustration. "I understand his situation and he could be happier, that’s for sure. He wants to play. I’m sure he’ll have his moments; that’s my responsibility. We were quite restricted with our substitutions at the end of the match. We also know that the Premier League is very intense and that you have to be ready to take on that challenge. He is in his second season and this injury should not keep him out for long," the Spanish coach told the press.

Xabi defends Emanuel Emegha

Emanuel Emegha returned after several months out. The Dutch striker played his first minutes for Chelsea on Wednesday, during their elimination by Liverpool (1-1, 6-5 on penalties) in the League Cup. Coming on in the 68th minute, he notably missed a penalty that could have sent the Blues through.

"It’s difficult to make your debut in these conditions, with a moment that could have changed everything for him and for us. But you have to learn from every experience, including this one, however sad it may be. As soon as we get on the bus, I’ll move on and think about Manchester United," the Spanish coach explained at a press conference.
