Europe's giants in the heart of Nairobi.. Bayern Munich and Ajax summit announces Kenya's readiness to host AFCON 2027

Bayern Munich and Ajax will inaugurate Kenya's new Raila Odinga International Stadium with a friendly on 5 January 2027 marking a major milestone in the country's preparations to co host the Africa Cup of Nations.

The 60,000 capacity stadium, located at Talanta Sports City in Nairobi, will welcome two of Europe's most decorated clubs just over five months before AFCON 2027 begins.

Kenyan President William Ruto announced the fixture on Wednesday 28 October, with both clubs subsequently confirming their participation.

According to Ajax's official announcement, the encounter will also form part of the Dutch club's preparations for the second half of the European season.

Bayern Munich & Ajax set for historic Nairobi encounter

The January fixture will bring together two clubs with ten European Cup and Champions League titles between them.

Bayern Munich have won Europe's premier club competition six times while Ajax have lifted the trophy on four occasions.

The German champions will visit Kenya for the first time, with the match scheduled during the Bundesliga's winter break.

Bayern board member for marketing and sales Rouven Kasper welcomed the opportunity to strengthen the club's relationship with African supporters.

"FC Bayern has millions of fantastic fans in Africa with whom we feel a close connection" Kasper said in the club's announcement.

He added that the visit would help Bayern expand their international presence and promote German football across the continent.

Ajax, meanwhile, described the invitation as an honour and an important occasion for football in East Africa.

The friendly will also provide Kenyan supporters with an opportunity to watch two leading European clubs compete at a newly constructed international venue.

What makes the new Raila Odinga International Stadium important?

The stadium, previously widely known as Talanta Stadium, is one of Kenya's most significant infrastructure projects ahead of AFCON 2027.

Built at Talanta Sports City in Nairobi, the venue has a planned capacity of approximately 60,000 spectators and features a hybrid playing surface.

According to the Kenyan authorities, the facility also includes modern hospitality areas, video assistant referee infrastructure and goal line technology.

As previously reported in its coverage of Kenya's stadium plans, the country's preparations also involve Kasarani Stadium and several training facilities.

The new venue has been named after former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, honouring his legacy and connection with Kenyan sport.

President Ruto described the forthcoming inauguration as a defining moment for the country.

"This is more than the opening of a stadium; it is a statement of who we are" he said.

A crucial test before AFCON 2027

Beyond the international attention surrounding Bayern Munich & Ajax, the friendly could serve an important operational purpose.

Organising a major match before the Africa Cup of Nations would allow Kenyan authorities to evaluate several aspects of stadium readiness under competitive matchday conditions.

These include crowd management, spectator access, security arrangements, broadcasting facilities, emergency procedures and transport connections.

The Confederation of African Football confirmed the opening plans on 29 October highlighting the stadium's importance to Kenya's preparations.

CAF officials had already inspected the facility in September alongside other tournament infrastructure including hotels, airports and training grounds.

However, a successful opening match would not automatically establish that every requirement for hosting AFCON matches had been satisfied.

Additional technical assessments and operational preparations will remain necessary before the continental tournament.

Can the opening ease concerns over Kenya's readiness?

The announcement comes amid continuing scrutiny of preparations for AFCON 2027 which Kenya will jointly host with Tanzania and Uganda.

As Foot Africa previously revealed in an exclusive interview with Ghanaian journalist Micky Jnr, progress at Talanta Stadium has been encouraging, although work at Kasarani and the training facilities remains an important area to monitor.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe has repeatedly insisted that there is no alternative hosting plan despite questions surrounding infrastructure deadlines.

The January inauguration could therefore provide tangible evidence of Kenya's progress, although the readiness of a single stadium cannot determine the overall preparedness of three host nations.

The tournament will involve 24 national teams, requiring coordinated arrangements across multiple cities and international borders.

The three countries previously gained valuable organisational experience by jointly staging the African Nations Championship in 2025.

Nevertheless, AFCON represents a considerably larger logistical challenge.

What happens next before AFCON 2027?

Tickets for the Bayern Munich-Ajax friendly are scheduled to go on sale on November 5, with further organisational details expected before the January fixture.

The inauguration will take place ahead of CAF's next major assessment period, making the stadium's operational performance particularly relevant.

AFCON 2027 is scheduled to begin on June 19 and conclude on July 17, bringing the tournament back to East Africa for the first time since Ethiopia hosted the competition in 1976.

It will also be the first Africa Cup of Nations jointly organised by three countries.
