France: Pierre Achille Webo takes charge of a Ligue 2 club

Former Cameroon international Pierre Achille Webo has been appointed head coach of USL Dunkerque in France’s Ligue 2 following Albert Sánchez’s departure for Las Palmas. Previously an assistant coach, he will lead the first team until further notice.

USL Dunkerque has entrusted Pierre Achille Webo with the reins of its first team. The French club announced the promotion of the former Cameroon striker to head coach following the departure of Spaniard Albert Sánchez, who is set to continue his career at UD Las Palmas.

This decision marks a new stage in the former Indomitable Lion’s transition into coaching. Already part of Dunkerque’s technical staff as an assistant, Webo will now take charge of the first team. His assignment begins in a context in which the club must ensure continuity in its sporting work following the departure of its previous coach.

An internal promotion to ensure continuity

Rather than rushing onto the market to recruit a new coach, Dunkerque’s management has opted for an internal solution. His knowledge of the squad and the club’s operations is an asset for the Cameroonian coach, who is already familiar with the working environment.

Appointed “until further notice,” Pierre Achille Webo does not, at this stage, have an officially announced end date for his assignment. The club has also not confirmed whether he will remain in the position until the end of the season.

A new challenge in the career of the former Indomitable Lion

A former Cameroon international, Pierre Achille Webo made his mark as a player through his time in Europe and his appearances at major international competitions with the Indomitable Lions. After hanging up his boots, he embarked on a new path: coaching.

His promotion at Dunkerque gives him the opportunity to take another step forward by assuming direct responsibility for a professional team. He will now have to manage tactical decisions, results and dressing-room dynamics in a league renowned for its demands.

A first meeting against Rodez

The schedule leaves him little time to settle in. USL Dunkerque are due to face Rodez on the next Ligue 2 matchday, scheduled for Friday, October 30, 2026. This match will be his first in charge of the first team, subject to confirmation of the official schedule.

For the Cameroonian coach, the challenge will be to maintain sporting continuity while gradually making his mark. His appointment opens a new chapter for Dunkerque, which has chosen to rely on a resource already within its coaching structure rather than immediately overhaul its organisation.
