Senegal: the revelations behind Ismail Jakobs’ premature international retirement
Although the announcement had been made back in September, it was denied by Patrick Vieira. On Wednesday, Ismail Jakobs’ international retirement was finally confirmed by the man himself. Here’s more!
At just 27, Ismail Jakobs is turning the page on Senegal after four years in the Lions of Teranga shirt. Behind a highly conventional statement lie some secrets. “I joined the national team as a young boy, and I am leaving it as a man,” wrote the Galatasaray player on social media.
Jakobs explained that he now wants to devote more time to his club career and his family.
Revelations about Ismail Jakobs’ decision
To understand this premature international retirement decision, we need to go back to September 18. Senegalese journalist Fatima Sylla announced at the time that the player had decided to retire from international football. Absent from Patrick Vieira’s first squad, Ismail Jakobs then saw his situation discussed by the new coach, who dismissed the possibility of a break.
In an interview with RTS on October 15, the latter even offered reassurance after a phone conversation with Jakobs. He referred to personal issues and imperfect communication. The coach explained that they had agreed to leave him at Galatasaray’s disposal. “There should be no issue on that front for the next international window in November,” he assured.
Two weeks later, however, Jakobs announced his retirement.
A very short international career for Jakobs
In four years, Ismail Jakobs made 33 international appearances, and played at two World Cups and two AFCON tournaments. A relatively short international career. His status had gradually become more fragile. The decision comes a few months after a particularly difficult 2026 World Cup behind the scenes for Senegal, marked by organisational problems, internal tensions and the departure of Pape Thiaw amid tensions with the federation.
