LaLiga: referees will now explain themselves after matches

La Liga is introducing a new measure from the 11th matchday of the championship. Referees will now be able to justify some of their decisions during interviews with DAZN and Movistar+. A fund of 500,000 euros has been set aside to remunerate their participation.

Spanish football is preparing to take a new step in communication surrounding refereeing. From this weekend, La Liga referees will be able to speak publicly after certain matches. The aim is to help supporters better understand the decisions made during games.

DAZN and Movistar+ covered by the initiative

The measure will apply to two matches per matchday. DAZN and Movistar+, the two broadcasters concerned, will each be able to interview a referee after a match.

These discussions will allow officials to revisit certain match situations. In particular, they will be able to explain their refereeing decisions and provide clarification on controversial incidents.

This initiative marks a change in relations between referees, the media and supporters. Until now, Spanish officials have rarely communicated directly after matches.

A 500,000-euro fund planned

To support this new measure, a total fund of 500,000 euros will be allocated to remunerate the participating referees.

The initiative involves LaLiga, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and the AESAF referees' association.

With this reform, the Spanish championship aims to increase transparency surrounding refereeing decisions. The officials' explanations could also help reduce misunderstandings after certain matches.

The 11th matchday of La Liga will serve as the starting point for this new experiment. It remains to be seen how the referees will handle this unprecedented exercise when faced with questions from broadcasters and the expectations of the public.
