Soweto Derby between the language of history and the top conflict.. Behind the scenes of the 61st clash between Pirates and Chiefs
Moroccan coach Abdeslam Ouaddou faces another major test as Orlando Pirates prepare to meet Kaizer Chiefs in Saturday's Soweto Derby, with an extraordinary historical balance adding significance to one of African football's fiercest rivalries.
The two South African giants will meet at Johannesburg's FNB Stadium on 31 October in the ninth round of the 2026 /27 Betway Premiership, with kick off scheduled for 15:30 local time.
The encounter will be their 61st league meeting since the introduction of the Premier Soccer League in 1996 /97, with the previous 60 producing an identical number of victories for both clubs.
Abdeslam Ouaddou seeks another victory over Kaizer Chiefs
Ouaddou approaches Saturday's encounter with an encouraging personal record against the Glamour Boys.
The former Morocco international guided Orlando Pirates to a convincing 3-0 victory over Chiefs in February 2026 before overseeing the 1-1 draw two months later.
As reported following the April encounter, the Moroccan coach expressed frustration with his opponents' physical approach despite securing a point.
Saturday's clash will therefore represent his third Soweto Derby as Pirates manager.
Speaking ahead of the match, Ouaddou acknowledged his team's status as favourites but warned against underestimating their opponents.
"To be favourites doesn't mean that you're going to win" he explained.
The Pirates coach also stressed that his players must approach the occasion with confidence, discipline and respect for the club's identity.
Orlando Pirates enter the derby eight points ahead of Chiefs
Current league form suggests an advantage for Ouaddou's side.
Pirates occupy second place with 22 points from eight matches, having recorded seven victories and one draw.
They trail leaders Mamelodi Sundowns by just one point while holding a game in hand.
Kaizer Chiefs, meanwhile, sit fifth with 14 points after three victories and five draws.
Both teams remain unbeaten in the league, although their ability to convert performances into victories has differed significantly.
The clubs also enter the derby following comfortable Carling Knockout Cup victories.
Orlando Pirates defeated Milford FC 3-0, with Tshepang Moremi scoring twice, while Chiefs beat TS Galaxy by the same scoreline.
Pirates have also secured qualification for the CAF Champions League group stage, providing additional momentum ahead of the domestic showdown.
Why Saturday's derby matters beyond the historical record
For Ouaddou, victory would strengthen Pirates' position in the title race and potentially move them above Sundowns, depending on other results.
For Chiefs coach Fernando da Cruz, the fixture represents an opportunity to narrow the gap and claim a significant victory against a direct domestic rival.
The psychological challenge will also be considerable.
Pirates have enjoyed the stronger recent results but Kaizer Chiefs' historical record and the unpredictable nature of the derby make any assumption of an easy victory premature.
As Foot Africa recently reported, Ouaddou has been working on his team's preparations and addressing areas requiring improvement.
The Moroccan coach will be particularly concerned with maintaining defensive organisation while allowing his attacking players to exploit spaces against a Chiefs side that has proved difficult to defeat this season.
The outcome could also provide an early indication of how both teams will handle pressure during the remaining months of the championship.
After 60 modern league meetings, the historical equation remains perfectly balanced.
Saturday's Soweto Derby offers Ouaddou the opportunity to give Orlando Pirates a 19th victory and finally break that remarkable deadlock while strengthening their pursuit of another South African league title.
