Kaizer Chiefs secured a hard-fought 2-0 win over Sekhukhune United in a Betway Premiership clash at FNB Stadium on Wednesday night, making it back-to-back victories in the league.

The match was marred by a lack of clear-cut scoring opportunities by both teams in the first half - a testament to the stern defences and highly-contested battles in the heart of midfield.

While chances proved hard to come by, the Soweto giants missed opportunities that could have seen them head into the half time interval with a lead, as the two teams were deadlocked at the break.

Chiefs took the lead through Luke Baartman following a quick build-up against the run of play, with the former Cape Town Spurs striker pouncing on a cut-back from Dillan Solomons in the 63rd minute.

Attacking midfielder Mduduzi Shabalala put the game to bed six minutes from time as he was put through on goal by Siphesihle Ndlovu for a one-on-one chance with Toaster Nsabata in the Babina Noko goal.

The Glamour Boys, as a result, climbed to the summit of the Betway Premiership standings with six points accumulated from two games, having beaten newly promoted side Kruger United in their league opener.

Sekhukhune, meanwhile, sit seventh on the log standings as they picked up three points from the opening two matches, having overcome Durban City in their first outing of the 2026/27 season.

Chiefs will swing back to action with a visit from Mamelodi Sundowns at the Calabash on Saturday, 15 August, while Cedric Kaze will now prepare his troops for a tussle against Polokwane City at Seshego Stadium on the same day.
