Kaizer Chiefs reject a lucrative offer from the US for a key player
Steven Mendes, the young Kaizer Chiefs prospect, is currently the talk of the town following his impressive displays for Amajita out in Mozambique.
Khumalo throws his weight behind 'Stevie G' for a first-team breakthrough
Vela Khumalo, who coaches the Chiefs Diski Challenge side, is convinced that 18-year-old wonderkid Steven Mendes already has both the composure and the natural gifts needed to step up to the senior squad.
Mendes finished as the top scorer at the recent COSAFA U20 competition held in Maputo, Mozambique. Though naturally a midfielder, he was deployed as a striker for the tournament. Among some of his teammates, he goes by the nickname 'Stevie G'. Backing up the buzz, reports from local outlets suggest that MLS outfit Chicago Fire are keeping tabs on the gifted youngster.
When do Chiefs take to the field next?
The Glamour Boys have now been held to draws in four of their seven league fixtures, spilling points in four of their most recent five outings. Finding the net has become a struggle as well, with only one goal registered across their past two matches.
The absence of Wandile Duba, who has struck three times in four Betway Premiership appearances this season, is being felt keenly. Their upcoming league assignment sees them face Stellenbosch on Saturday, 17 October at 15:30. The faithful will be keeping their fingers crossed that the lengthy international pause arrived at the right moment and can help the side reset and refocus.
