Kaizer Chiefs trigger Khanyisa Mayo buy option

Foot Africa can confirm that Kaizer Chiefs have triggered the buy option to make Khanyisa Mayo's stay at Naturena permanent ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

The 27-year-old striker signed for Amakhosi on a season-long loan from Algerian giants CR Belouizdad, where he was deemed surplus to requirements in the last term.

Mayo joined CRB in a reported high-profile deal worth in the region of €600 000 (R11 million) from then-Betway Premiership side Cape Town City in August 2024.

He made a total of 41 appearances across all competitions, chipping in with six goals and a solitary assist in his debut season at Belouizdad.

His career in Algiers took a downward spiral upon the appointment of the outspoken Sead Ramovic as the club's new head coach in February 2025.

The former TS Galaxy mentor had no intention of banking on Mayo for the 2025/26 season, opting against registering the player, which paved way for a loan to Chiefs.

Now, sources have told this publication that the Glamour Boys are set to retain Mayo beyond the expiry of his loan deal by virtue of activating the purchase clause.

While he arrived at Chiefs as a marquee signing, the centre-forward only managed to score two goals in 15 appearances across all competitions last season.

However, the Chiefs hierarchy has backed Mayo to find his scoring boots under newly appointed head coach Fernando da Cruz in the upcoming campaign.

Mayo's experience is deemed crucial in attack with the Soweto giants set to compete on all fronts next term, including in the CAF Confederation Cup.
