Former Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah's expressed confidence in the Black Stars’ chances of qualifying for the FIFA World Cup 2026 but insists that resolving the ongoing captaincy controversy is crucial for team unity.

Leadership Crisis in the Black Stars

The captaincy situation has been recurring issue for the national team with frequent changes causing uncertainty in the squad. Following the absence of Andre Ayew & Thomas Partey both Mohammed Kudus and Jordan Ayew have taken turns leading the team drawing criticism from fans and analysts.

According to Ghanasoccernet, head coach Otto Addo's confirmed that Jordan Ayew's now the new captain with Alexander Djiku serving as his deputy, Partey's declined permanent leadership role further complicating matters.

Appiah Calls for Urgent Resolution

Speaking on Luv FM, Appiah emphasized the importance of stability and cohesion ahead of Ghana’s upcoming matches “I'm hoping that what I've heard is true, that they’re trying to sort out the captaincy issue. If there're other issues, I hope they resolve them but you know I’m not with the team so it’s not everything that I know”

“If they’re able to sort the captaincy issue, then it’s okay because the players we've are quality and then we make sure there’s no division in the team. Without unity, we cannot achieve anything so I hope and pray that Ghana will qualify for the World Cup”

Ghana’s Path to the 2026 World Cup

Ghana’s World Cup qualification campaign resumes with 2 critical fixtures:

  • March 17 Ghana vs Chad (the Accra Sports Stadium)
  • March 24 Ghana vs Madagascar (Morocco)

The Black Stars're currently tied at the top of Group I with Comoros, both teams having secured 9 point from 4 match.
