South African U20 national team defensive midfielder Lazola Maku is still unattached and Foot Africa has the latest update on his future.

The 19-year-old anchor man is eligible to sign for any team of his choice after parting ways with Betway Premiership side Siwelele FC at the end of last term.

A product of the Ubuntu Academy in Cape Town, Maku played 235 minutes in five appearances in the league under head coach Lehlohonolo Seema.

He is said to be exploring a move to Europe in a bid to fast-track his development as a player and secure ample game time next season.

Now, sources have indicated Maku was recently under assessment at newly promoted Austrian second-tier outfit FC Wacker Innsbruck.

However, it's understood the second division side opted against offering the SA junior international a contract, owing to fierce competition in his position.

Furthermore, Austrian topflight side SV Ried also invited Maku for assessments, with the outcome of his trials unclear at this stage.

Notably, Maku was part of the Amajita squad that clinched the U20 Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt, Cairo last year.

Whether the AFCON winner will pen a deal with SV Ried or find an alternative club remains to be seen, with the 2026/27 season gathering steam.
