Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Thabo Cele remains the subject of an uncertain future at Naturena, with the 2026/27 campaign gathering steam.

The 29-year-old midfield general was omitted from the squad that partook in the pre-season camp in Spain, a decision that raised eyebrows.

He is yet to make the matchday squad this season, with newly appointed head coach Fernando da Cruz making it clear he's surplus to requirements.

Cele joined the Glamour Boys as a marquee signing in January 2025 from Russian outfit Fakel Voronezh, and instantly became a fan favourite.

Notably, he put pen to paper on a long-term deal with an option to extend, having spent a large chunk of his career in Europe after leaving his homeland in 2016.

The former South Africa youth international went on to make to make a total of 36 appearances and won the Nedbank Cup with Chiefs in the 2024/25 season.

With his future hanging in the balance, Foot Africa contacted his agent Gary Cassisa, who provided the latest regarding the player's situation at Chiefs.

“He will only part ways with Kaizer Chiefs when he signs with a new club. Until then, he is contracted to the club until 30 June 2027,” said the football deal closer.

Whether Cele will finish the season at Chiefs remains to be seen, amid reports the two parties are in talks over a mutual termination at the right conditions.
