Lebohang Maboe backs Pitso Mosimane to succeed as Bafana coach

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Lebohang Maboe has backed Pitso Mosimane to succeed as Bafana Bafana head coach, in what will be his second spell in charge of the South Africa national team.

The 62-year-old tactician was announced as the new boss in the dugout by the South African Football Association (SAFA) on Tuesday, replacing Hugo Broos, who stepped down after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Notably, the Belgian mentor guided Bafana to a Bronze medal at the 2023 Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast and a maiden knockout phase berth in the World Cup, during his five-year tenure.

Now, Maboe believes Mosimane, under whom he shone at Mamelodi Sundowns, will succeed at the helm of Bafana, noting how the renowned coach knows the South African football landscape and the players.

“Firstly, congratulations to coach Pitso, and I'm very happy for him. I think he's going to do well in the national team, he's a coach that knows this league so well and that knows how South African players are,” said the Chiefs dynamo.

Having made the preliminary World Cup squad, owing to his performances at the back end of last season, the 31-year-old dynamic midfielder is eager to up the ante this term after opening his Chiefs account in the club's last league outing.

“I still want to improve, I still want more. I'm looking forward to building from the performances that I had last season, and the good start that I've had this season,” Maboe added.

"I can only get better from here, I always demand more from myself, I always believe that there's always a room for improvement.

"So, going into this season, I'm definitely looking to improve my stats with assists, with more goals, with more box entries, so I'm looking forward to the season.

Chiefs, meanwhile, swing back to action with a Betway Premiership clash against Siwelele FC at Dobsonville Stadium on Sunday, with the Glamour Boys looking to snap a run of two successive stalemates.
