"Let's have a real meeting": Djibril Cissé issues direct challenge to Wayne Rooney and Mike Dean

Former Queens Park Rangers forward Djibril Cissé has issued a public challenge to Wayne Rooney and former referee Mike Dean, demanding a face to face confrontation to clear up persistent claims that he celebrated Manchester City's dramatic 2012 Premier League title victory.

The resurface of 2012 accusations

Frustration boiled over for Cissé after a resurfaced clip from a 2025 episode of The Overlap Fan Debate circulated widely on X over the weekend.

In the video, Dean and Rooney discussed the chaotic final day of the 2011 /12 season when Sergio Agüero scored his iconic stoppage time winner against QPR to snatch the title away from Manchester United.

Dean claimed that once QPR realized they had secured Premier League survival despite the defeat, their attitude on the pitch changed.

The former referee asserted that QPR players essentially handed possession back to City after equalizing to make it 2-2 noting that Jamie Mackie was already celebrating while the match was ongoing.

Rooney whose United side had won 1-0 away at Sunderland earlier that afternoon, added fuel to the fire by claiming that Cissé celebrated with Manchester City players after the final whistle.

Cissé’s direct challenge and past defense

Cissé immediately took to social media on Monday to shut down the accusations, writing:

"I will not let you continue saying this nonsense. Let's have a real meeting and talk about it. I won't accept this nonsense from you anymore, so let's do it"

In a subsequent post, the Frenchman deflected blame back onto the title contenders, asking:

"Were we the ones to blame if Manchester City & Manchester United had lost five games in the league and waited until the final match to decide the title?"

The former striker has previously addressed the controversy in an interview with FourFourTwo, explaining that his post match celebrations were entirely personal. Cissé clarified that he was embracing his close friend and compatriot Samir Nasri, who had spent 15 years as his confidant, rather than celebrating City's triumph as a club.

"I was celebrating with my brother Samir who has been a friend of mine for 15 years... I was happy for my friend, and also because we had managed to stay up. Manchester City doesn't concern me. My friend finally won the Premier League after years in England and I was happy for him and for myself" Cissé stated previously.
