Liga Portugal: Geny Catamo takes the lead in assists after three matchdays

Geny Catamo has kicked off the season in sensational form with Sporting CP. After just three Liga Betclic matches, the Mozambican international has already provided four assists, equaling his best tally for an entire league campaign.

Geny Catamo wasted no time making his mark from the opening matchday. The winger was involved in Sporting's first goal, setting up Rodrigo Zalazar against Estrela Amadora (2-2), and kept up this momentum in the following fixtures.

Against Vitória on matchday two, he was decisive once again, delivering an assist to Fotis Ioannidis that gave Sporting the lead in a thrilling encounter they eventually won 3-2. Catamo continued to impress in the third round. Facing Alverca, he whipped in a cross from the right side, which was deflected by the opposing goalkeeper Mendes. The Alverca keeper ended up scoring an own goal, once again highlighting the offensive impact of Sporting’s in-form winger.

He then set up the third goal for Suarez, sealing Sporting’s 3-1 victory. This latest contribution brings Catamo’s tally to four assists since the start of the campaign.

This efficiency already surpasses his output from last season, when he registered three assists over the entire year.

A record already matched

This achievement stands out even more when compared to his previous numbers. Last season, Geny Catamo managed three assists across the whole league campaign. Now, he’s already surpassed that total in just three matches.

Most notably, the winger has equaled his personal best, set during the 2023-2024 season—his first with Sporting—when he finished with four league assists. This time, it’s taken him only three games to reach a mark that previously took a whole season to achieve.

Catamo reaching new heights

This start to the season confirms Geny Catamo’s evolving role at Sporting. Already valued for his midfield work rate, the 25-year-old is now proving especially effective with his final passes.

With four assists in three outings, he’s already on the brink of breaking his own best. And, above all, this momentum could see him surpass the four-assist mark for the first time in a single league season.
