Liverpool: Bradley Barcola answers critics with a hat-trick against LASK
Bradley Barcola ended his goal drought in the best possible way. Criticised since his arrival at Liverpool, the French winger scored a hat-trick in the Reds’ 6-3 victory over LASK this Wednesday, 14 October, in the Champions League.
Bradley Barcola chose the European stage to answer his critics. Signed this summer from Paris Saint-Germain for a fee that could reach €140 million, the France international was under pressure after a difficult start in his new colours.
Until this match against LASK, the forward had scored no goals or provided any assists for Liverpool. That record was insufficient given the amount invested by the English club, which had placed high expectations on his shoulders.
A hat-trick to get his season under way
Starting in Austria, Barcola quickly found his bearings. He scored his first two goals in the 24th and 37th minutes, after Ronald Araújo had opened the scoring in the 22nd minute. Liverpool went into the break with a comfortable three-goal lead.
In the second half, the French winger completed his hat-trick in the 66th minute, after goals from Jeremie Frimpong and Barcola’s second goal. Lewis Koumas also joined in the Reds’ attacking display, as they ultimately won 6-3 despite the three goals scored by the Austrian club.
This hat-trick represents a direct response to the criticism that had accompanied his first weeks at Anfield. In one evening, Barcola opened his personal account and demonstrated his ability to influence a match.
First relief after a €140 million transfer
The size of his transfer fee quickly put Barcola under pressure. Arriving from PSG with the label of a major signing, the Frenchman had to justify Liverpool’s investment.
His lack of goals and assists had fuelled questions about his adaptation. This European performance gives him a first concrete answer, even if it is not enough to erase all the expectations linked to his signing.
With three goals against LASK, Barcola now has his defining performance in a Reds shirt. He still has to confirm his form in the league to turn this European evening into a genuine starting point.
Full-time: LASK 3-6 Liverpool.
