Liverpool: Bradley Barcola’s underwhelming start to the season raises questions
Liverpool: Bradley Barcola’s underwhelming start to the season raises questions

Signed from Paris Saint-Germain for a reported fee of more than €140 million, including bonuses, Bradley Barcola has still neither scored nor provided an assist for Liverpool. His start to the season has raised questions about his attacking efficiency, but his coach refuses to reduce his performances to his statistics alone.

Bradley Barcola is still waiting for his first decisive contribution in a Liverpool shirt. Having arrived in the final days of the 2026 summer transfer window, the French winger has yet to get off the mark for the Reds. As of 11 October, his first appearances in England remain without a goal or an assist, while his transfer fee means that each of his performances is being closely scrutinised.

Statistics still blank

In the Premier League, Barcola had played three matches before the game against Manchester City on 11 October, for around 170 minutes of playing time. He had scored no goals and provided no assists. He had also featured in the Champions League match against Atlético de Madrid and the League Cup game against Tottenham.

Against Manchester City on Sunday, the French forward started. Liverpool lost 3-0 at Anfield and Barcola was substituted in the 88th minute. He was unable to open his account in that match.

These figures need to be put into context. Barcola’s playing time has remained limited since his arrival, and his record cannot be assessed solely through goals and assists. His ability to take on opponents, create openings and get into goalscoring positions must also be taken into account when analysing his performances.

Iraola defends his contribution to the team’s play

Andoni Iraola does not share the view that his winger is necessarily going through a poor spell. Before hosting Manchester City, the Liverpool manager pointed out that forwards are often judged through their statistics, to the detriment of the content of their performances.

The coach notably referred to the two or three clear chances Barcola missed against Atlético de Madrid. He also noted that the Frenchman had created several promising opportunities with the national team without managing to convert them. For Iraola, the fact that his player is getting into those positions is already something to take into account. He described him as a “super valuable” player for the team.

This statement provides important context. Barcola does not appear to be lacking only in attacking presence: the question also concerns his ability to convert the chances he creates. Efficiency in the final action will be one of the criteria to monitor in his next appearances.

English intensity, a factor in his adaptation

Barcola himself has discussed the physical demands of his new environment. In an interview published by Liverpool on 9 October, he explained that he was gradually adapting to the English league, where runs come in quick succession at a sustained pace. He also expressed his ambition to succeed at this new stage of his career.

Adaptation is not limited to physical conditioning. It also involves building understanding with his teammates, the movements required by the system of play and managing rapid transitions. For a winger who relies on his speed and bursts of acceleration, these adjustments can affect the consistency of his performances.

A transfer that increases expectations

The transfer fee adds further pressure. Liverpool officially announced Barcola’s arrival from PSG at the end of August. The transfer was reported to be worth more than €140 million, including bonuses. A sum that inevitably puts the French forward among the players whose output will be particularly closely monitored.

It would nevertheless be premature to speak of a failure after just a few weeks and with his playing time still limited. The next matches will provide a better measure of his integration, his influence on the game and his ability to turn his chances into goals.

The immediate priority is less to respond to comments about his transfer fee than to find the back of the net. His coach believes he is already creating dangerous opportunities. He now needs to convert them.
