Louis Mafouta made a decisive impact on his return to Ligue 1. He scored a goal and provided an assist in a thrilling 2-2 draw against Stade Brestois on Saturday at the Marie-Marvingt stadium.

Sixteen years after their return to the top flight, Le Mans earned their first point of the season in front of 19,801 fans. Trailing after goals from Romain Del Castillo and Kamory Doumbia, the Sang et Or fought back thanks to Dame Gueye, set up by Mafouta, before the Central African striker found the net himself. Having joined Le Mans on July 11, the Central African international made a remarkable debut with his new club.

A goal for his big comeback

It took just 55 minutes for Louis Mafouta to rediscover his scoring touch in Ligue 1. On one of Le Mans’ first real chances, the striker fired the ball into the net to give his side a brief lead. Just minutes earlier, he had already been involved in Dame Gueye’s equalizer.

A complete performance that immediately lived up to the expectations placed upon him. For his first official match with Le Mans in the top division, Mafouta finished with a goal and an assist, directly contributing to both of his team’s goals.

More than four years since his last Ligue 1 goal

This goal also holds special significance for the Central African forward. His previous Ligue 1 goal dated back to May 1, 2022, when he scored for Metz against Montpellier in a 2-2 draw. That season, he netted twice in the top flight.

The next chapter of his career was mostly written in Ligue 2, where Mafouta steadily confirmed his striker credentials. His arrival at Le Mans marks a return to the spotlight in a league he already knows well. And in his first outing, the 31-year-old striker wasted no time in sending a clear message: he’s a force to be reckoned with.

After this opening matchday, Le Mans walks away with a precious point and, above all, plenty of reasons for optimism. On a historic night for the club, Louis Mafouta has already begun to write his own story in the Sang et Or jersey.
