Mamelodi Sundowns secured an emphatic 5-2 victory over AmaZulu FC in a seven-goal Betway Premiership thriller at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Brazilians got the first sight of goal as Cassius Mailula saw his shot saved by Wilfried Kouassi in the 12th minute after a lack of clear-cut scoring opportunities in the opening exchanges.

Masandawana eventually broke the deadlock in spectacular fashion 13 minutes later, with goal poacher Brayan Leon scoring a volley on the edge of the box to end a three-game run without a goal in the league.

Teboho Mokoena marked his return from injury with a goal as he placed his freekick into the top corner of the Usuthu goal in the 32nd minute, ensuring the home team hold a 2-0 advantage at the interval.

AmaZulu made their intentions clear from the beginning of the second half, with in-form Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya reducing Sundowns' lead as he beat Ronwen Williams in the 46th minute.

Sundowns, however, restored their two-goal cushion five minutes later, thanks to Tashreeq Matthews, who scored from close range after the Usuthu shot-stopper failed to deal with a cross from the right flank.

The Speedy winger was once again involved in the 66th minute as his effort hit the post prior to setting up Leon to net his second of the night and as many goals in the league thus far.

On the other end, Ngwenya completed his brace in the 69th minute, taking his tally to five Betway Premiership goals and seven across all competitions, including the MTN8.

Bennet Mokoena, who entered the fray as a substitute in the last 13 minutes of regulation time, rounded up the scoring in stoppage time for his first-ever topflight goal.

Sundowns, as a result, moved up to second place on the log standings and level on points with defending champions and table toppers Orlando Pirates, who have accumulated 10 points in the opening four league outings.

Miguel Cardoso's men return to action with the second leg of their MTN8 semi-final clash against Golden Arrows at King Zwelithini Stadium on Sunday, as they look to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first meeting.
