Manchester City: Steven Gerrard calls for very heavy sanctions
Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is calling for lasting sanctions against Manchester City after the verdict in the financial case.
Steven Gerrard did not mince his words when discussing the situation at Manchester City. The former Liverpool legend called for severe sanctions against the Citizens after the verdict in the case involving the financial breaches the club was accused of committing between 2009 and 2018.
Manchester City was found guilty of 114 of the 115 breaches it was accused of, although the final punishment has yet to be determined. Appearing on The Overlap Daily, Gerrard felt that simply being relegated would not be enough.
“Make them suffer as they have made everyone suffer”
The former Reds captain would particularly like to see City deducted points over several seasons, banned from signing players and even have an asterisk placed next to the trophies won during the period in question. “Make them suffer as they have made everyone suffer,” he said.
The subject is inevitably a personal one for Gerrard. In 2013-14, Liverpool finished second in the Premier League, just two points behind Manchester City. However, he does not want to receive a championship medal retroactively. “I think I’ve come to terms with the fact that I never won the Premier League. I wouldn’t want the players to react individually; that wouldn’t be fair. But the club itself must be exposed.”
26 matches against City as a player
This rivalry was a major part of Gerrard’s career. Wearing the Liverpool shirt, the former midfielder faced Manchester City 26 times in all competitions. His record was positive, with 12 wins, 9 draws and 5 defeats. He also scored 6 goals and provided 10 assists against the Citizens.
In the Premier League alone, Gerrard faced City 23 times, recording 10 wins, 8 draws and 5 defeats. He therefore experienced this rivalry on the pitch for many years before encountering it again from the dugout a few years later.
No wins as a manager against the Citizens
As a manager, Gerrard faced Manchester City three times, all with Aston Villa. His record was considerably less favorable: no wins, one draw and two defeats.
A charged personal history that also explains the strength of his current reaction. Gerrard is not calling for the players to return their trophies, but wants the club to bear the lasting consequences of this affair.
