115 financial fair play breaches: Manchester City found guilty!

Manchester City is reportedly found guilty on almost all financial charges, but the club is already preparing its legal response.

The case that has poisoned English football for several years has taken a major turn. According to The Athletic, Manchester City has been found guilty on almost all of the 115 charges brought against it by the Premier League over alleged breaches of financial regulations between 2009 and 2018.

However, the British media outlet specifies that the proceedings have not yet been fully completed and that no final sanction has been decided at this stage. All options therefore remain open for the independent commission handling the case.

Manchester City responds and invokes confidentiality

The Manchester club quickly reacted through a spokesperson. “The proceedings initiated by the Premier League are ongoing, with certain important elements still to be finalized, and are subject to strict confidentiality,” City said.

The statement added that the club’s position remains consistent with the one it has maintained since February 2023. Manchester City says it has “scrupulously followed the process” and reiterates that it expects the body to provide an “independent, impartial and fair” process.

City expected to challenge the verdict

According to The Athletic, Manchester City is expected to appeal the decision once the process has been officially completed. The legal battle is therefore far from over. The case involving the 115 charges had already taken on a dimension far broader than the sporting sphere in recent weeks.

The accusations notably concern the accuracy of the financial information submitted, sponsorship revenue, certain remuneration packages, as well as compliance with the rules on cooperation with the investigation. City has always denied the allegations made against it.

Sanction still completely unknown

At this stage, no penalty has been announced. The Premier League regulations theoretically allow for several types of sanctions, but it would be premature to anticipate which one will be imposed until the commission publishes its full decision.

On the sporting front, Manchester City is therefore continuing its season normally in the league and in the Champions League. The focus in the coming weeks will now be twofold: finding out about any potential sanction and following the challenge announced by the club, which could further prolong one of the most sensitive cases in the recent history of English football.
