Manchester City: the 115 charges case takes on a diplomatic dimension

The financial case involving Manchester City has now gone beyond the realm of sport, with potential sanctions that could affect relations between the United Kingdom and Abu Dhabi.

The Premier League accuses Manchester City of possible irregularities, mainly committed between 2009 and 2018. The 115 alleged breaches concern the accuracy of financial information provided, the declaration of sponsorship revenues, certain payments made to players and coaches, as well as compliance with UEFA and Premier League financial regulations. The club is also accused of not fully cooperating with the investigation.

Manchester City denies all allegations and is still awaiting the decision of the independent commission tasked with reviewing the case.

A possible diplomatic fallout

According to Foot Mercato, citing information from Bloomberg, Emirati officials have warned that a ruling against the Citizens could sour relations between the United Kingdom and Abu Dhabi. Club owner Sheikh Mansour is also Vice President and Deputy Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates.

This warning does not mean a diplomatic crisis has erupted, but it nonetheless highlights the political and economic weight of the issue. Abu Dhabi has reportedly already invested over £20 billion in the UK, making its ties with London a major strategic concern.

More than three billion euros spent and 26 trophies won

Since Sheikh Mansour’s group took over in 2008, Manchester City had spent more than €3.14 billion on transfers up to the end of the 2025-2026 season. Taking into account sales during this period, the club’s net spending surpassed €1.77 billion. These figures have continued to rise since the start of the 2026 summer transfer window.

This financial firepower has been matched by 26 trophies: eight Premier League titles, seven League Cups, four FA Cups, four Community Shields, one Champions League, one UEFA Super Cup, and one Club World Cup. It's a formidable trophy haul, but its legacy could be overshadowed by the final verdict and any sanctions imposed on Manchester City.
