FC Barcelona strongly condemns what it considers a disproportionate use of force against its supporters prior to Sunday's La Liga clash in Elche.

Barça denounces what it sees as disproportionate arrest

FC Barcelona has taken a firm stance following incidents outside the Martínez Valero stadium ahead of their La Liga match against Elche. In an official statement published on Monday, the Catalan club denounces the "disproportionate use of force" during the arrest of one of its supporters.

The Blaugrana board believes the procedure used during this arrest lacked both consistency and proportionality in the use of force. The club also states it stands ready to support the fan in question and their family, providing any assistance they may need.

‘Estelades’ at the heart of the conflict

Barça also condemns the confiscation of several estelades by law enforcement. The club reminds everyone that this Catalan independence flag is a legal symbol and that displaying it is an act of free expression. According to Barça, its presence in the stands cannot automatically be equated with incitement to hatred or violence.

The Spanish champions are now awaiting explanations regarding these events. The club also reserves the right to take any necessary action to defend the integrity, rights, and freedom of expression of its socios and fans, both at Spotify Camp Nou and in rival stadiums.

Incidents before Elche-Barça

These incidents preceded Barça’s resounding 5-0 victory over Elche. The match was also marked by Gavi being forced off with an injury before halftime. Medical tests conducted on Monday revealed it was just a minor contusion to his right knee. Nothing serious, and his return to training is expected soon.
