FC Barcelona has provided reassuring news about Gavi, who was replaced before halftime during their emphatic victory over Elche.

The evening was nearly perfect for FC Barcelona. In their opening match of the 2026-2027 La Liga season, the reigning Spanish champions crushed Elche on their home turf (5-0). Raphinha and Fermín López both bagged a brace, while Karim Adeyemi found the net on his official debut in the Blaugrana shirt.

Just a contusion for Gavi

The only concern revolved around Gavi, who took a knock to his right knee and was replaced by Pedri in the 44th minute. The Catalan club gave no update on Sunday night, but released a reassuring medical statement on Monday morning:

"Pablo Gavi received a blow to his right knee during yesterday's match. Medical examinations carried out this morning have confirmed that it is only a contusion. He is expected to rejoin training in a short period."

The 2026 World Cup winner thus avoids another lengthy spell on the sidelines, having already faced several significant issues with his right knee. No precise timetable was given, but the diagnosis rules out any serious injury and raises hopes for a swift return to full training.

Gavi's availability for Barça's next fixture remains uncertain. Hansi Flick's side will host Athletic Club on Thursday, August 27 at 9pm at Spotify Camp Nou, to play their postponed opening match of the league campaign.
