Marcelo tipped for FC Nantes

Marcelo could soon return to the world of football in a new role. According to L’Équipe, the former Brazil international is being tipped to become FC Nantes’ global ambassador as part of a project to take over the club, which is currently engaged in advanced negotiations.

A takeover project featuring prestigious names

The sale of FC Nantes is reportedly entering an advanced stage. After nearly 20 years at the helm of the club, current owner Waldemar Kita is said to be willing to sell his stake. Among the candidates seeking to take over is Paulo Tavares, a 62-year-old French-Portuguese entrepreneur and former players’ agent. He leads a consortium financed by Phenix Sport Invest, whose project notably includes giving Les Canaris a new identity.

According to L’Équipe, the proposal put forward by Tavares would include several figures who could embody this new direction. Marcelo would take on the role of the club’s global ambassador.

Marcelo, a global football figure

A former emblematic player for Real Madrid and Brazil, Marcelo won the Champions League five times with the Spanish club. He also played for Olympiacos and Fluminense, where he ended his career. Retired for more than a year and a half, the former full-back has never been associated with French football. A possible appointment in Nantes would therefore represent a new step in his career, this time away from the pitch.

However, Marcelo’s involvement in the project depends on the outcome of negotiations over the takeover of FC Nantes. The discussions would reportedly center in particular on the financial expectations of Waldemar Kita, who would like to sell his stake for close to €100 million, and Paulo Tavares’ proposal, which would reportedly be approximately twice that amount. Despite this significant gap, the talks are continuing.
