Michael Kayode explains why he turned down Nigeria

Michael Kayode had the option of representing Nigeria. Born in Italy to Nigerian parents, the Brentford right-back was contacted by the Super Eagles but ultimately opted for the Italian national team, with which he could make his international debut.

Nigeria made contact with Kayode

Michael Kayode has the option of representing both Italy and Nigeria thanks to his family background. The Nigerian national team did in fact contact the 22-year-old defender in an attempt to convince him. The Brentford player confirmed the approach while explaining why he chose Italy:

Nigeria contacted me, that’s true. But I came through the Italian youth academies and I have always considered it an honour to be part of this national team.

Having developed in Italy, Kayode represented the various Italian youth teams before receiving his first call-up to the senior national team.

Michael Kayode wants to continue with Italy

The defender has therefore decided to continue his international career with the Azzurri. He could make his first appearance on Friday against Belgium, on the opening matchday of the Nations League. The call-up comes after a good spell with Brentford.

Arriving from Fiorentina in 2025, initially on loan, Kayode quickly established himself in the London club’s squad. He now has 63 appearances for Brentford, with two goals and three assists. His next step will be to try to establish himself with the Italian national team.
