Montpellier: Season over for Issiaga Sylla

A tough blow for Issiaga Sylla! The Guinean's season with Montpellier Hérault SC has come to a premature end following a setback. He suffered a calf injury during training earlier this week. Furthermore, the 31-year-old defender, whose contract expires in June 2025, is not expected to be offered a new deal by the Hérault side.

Arriving on a free transfer from Toulouse in January 2023, the Guinean international defender (88 caps) made an immediate impact with his performances under Michel Der Zakarian. He scored one goal and provided three assists in 15 Ligue 1 matches during the second half of the 2022/23 campaign. However, this promising momentum was halted by a series of recurring physical setbacks that disrupted his consistency. He suffered a string of muscle injuries in May, September, and November 2023, as well as March and September 2024. Most recently, he was sidelined for about three months, from January to March 2025.

In two and a half years, Sylla has played just 54 matches in Montpellier colours. He has scored three goals and delivered five assists, figures well short of his 211 appearances for Toulouse. This season, he featured in only 19 league games. His latest injury comes as Montpellier has already been relegated to Ligue 2. The club is undergoing a sweeping squad overhaul under Zoumana Camara’s leadership. Sylla is among those set to depart.
