Netherlands: this player leaves the camp
The Netherlands will have to finish their camp without Jan Paul van Hecke. The Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB) announced that the 26-year-old defender, who has suffered a foot injury, is ruled out. The player has been allowed to leave the squad to join Tottenham, where he will continue his treatment.
An injury that comes at the worst possible time
Jan Paul van Hecke will not take part in the remainder of the Netherlands' international fixtures. According to the KNVB statement, his foot injury prevents him from continuing with the camp. The defender will therefore return to his club early. Tottenham's medical staff will oversee his recovery in order to determine the next steps in his return to competition.
This absence is a blow for the Netherlands, as Van Hecke has gradually established himself as an important part of their defence.
The Oranje without a regular starter
The defender had notably played the entirety of the Netherlands' last two matches Netherlands during this international period. The team coached by Xavi had first shared the points with Germany, before winning away against Serbia. They must now face Greece, who have won their first two matches and sit top of the group.
Without Van Hecke, the Netherlands will have to reorganise their defence as they look to continue their campaign in the Nations League. Van Hecke's early return will allow Tottenham to monitor the development of his injury directly. However, the length of his absence has not been specified.
