Newcastle reach agreement with Manchester City for Nico González

Newcastle have reached a verbal agreement with Manchester City for Nico González, who is expected to play a major role in the Magpies' new project.

The transfer of Nico González to Newcastle is on the verge of being finalized. According to Fabrizio Romano, the Magpies have struck a verbal agreement with Manchester City for a fee of £47 million, with an additional £3 million in bonuses. The Spanish midfielder has given the green light to the move, and the official announcement is expected once the final formalities are completed.

Manchester City recoup most of their investment

Signed from FC Porto in February 2025 for around €60 million, González put pen to paper with the Citizens until June 2029. The 24-year-old has played 58 matches in a Manchester City shirt, scoring four goals. Last season, he featured in 41 games across all competitions, netting twice.

Despite significant playing time, the former Barcelona and Valencia man never established himself as an undisputed starter at Manchester City. Nevertheless, his departure will allow the English club to recoup most of the money they invested in him. Not long ago, the midfielder had ruled out a move away from Manchester City.

A major role awaits Nico González at Newcastle

Following the departures of Bruno Guimarães and Sandro Tonali, Newcastle needed to bolster a midfield that had been significantly weakened. González fits the bill, bringing his Premier League experience, technical quality, and the ability to play either as a holding midfielder or in a box-to-box role.

Fabrizio Romano reports that the Spaniard is set to become a key figure in the Magpies' project. This prospect is believed to have played a decisive role in his choice to join Newcastle, where he should enjoy more playing time than he did at Manchester City.

A second midfield signing still expected

Nico González's arrival is an important first step, but it may not be enough to offset the simultaneous departures of Guimarães and Tonali. Newcastle could therefore look to bring in another quality midfielder before the transfer window closes as they rebuild their engine room.
