Neymar's transfer to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017 will remain a landmark in football history. To secure the Brazilian's services, the Parisian club shelled out 222 million euros, the highest transfer fee ever recorded. A colossal amount, paid in a single installment.
Wagner Ribeiro, Neymar's former agent, recently revealed an astonishing anecdote on the show Complément d’enquête. He claims to have captured the moment by photographing the check, written in Arabic and signed by a Qatari bank:
It was an unforgettable check. We even took a photo of it: 220 million euros! There will be no other transfers of this magnitude. It came from the Qatari bank and was written in Arabic. I didn't understand everything, but I'll never forget that figure. It was almost surreal.
Neymar's arrival at PSG was supposed to be the starting point of a European conquest. His salary then increased from 25 to 40 million euros annually. But despite stars like Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi, Paris never clinched the Champions League during Neymar's era. In six seasons, the Brazilian played 173 games, scored 118 goals, and provided 77 assists. He enriched PSG's trophy cabinet, but the club's ultimate goal remained out of reach.
