OFFICIAL: Kaizer Chiefs confirm first exit ahead of 2026/27 season

Kaizer Chiefs have announced the departure of midfielder George Matlou upon the expiry of his contract at the end of June, ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

The 27-year-old attacking midfielder signed for the Soweto giants in July 2022 after a productive spell at the now-defunct Swallows FC, where he caught the eye.

Matlou went on to make 46 appearances across all competitions for Chiefs, chipping in with three assists in the process.

However, the utility player was subject to a lack of game time in recent seasons as he featured six times last term - this after earning a contract extension at the eleventh hour.

Notably, he won the Nedbank Cup under the tutelage of then-head coach Nasreddine Nabi in the 2024/25 season, helping the club end a decade-long trophy drought.

“After four seasons with Kaizer Chiefs, George Matlou's contract will not be renewed when it expires at the end of June 2026,” read the club statement.

"The 27-year-old attacking midfielder joined the Glamour Boys from Swallows FC in July 2022 and played an important role in the squad that lifted the Nedbank Cup during the 2024/25 season.

"We thank George for his commitment and contribution to Amakhosi and wish him well in his future career.

The former South Africa youth international is now set for a new chapter as he's eligible to sign for a team of his choice, with Stellenbosch FC reportedly interested.
