Mamelodi Sundowns outcast Abubeker Nasir has completed a move to Ethopian Premier League side Mechal Sports Club, ending an injury-ravaged stay at Chloorkop.

The 26-year-old centre-forward joined the Brazilians in a high-profile move from Ethiopia Coffee in February 2022, but spent the remainder of the 2021/22 campaign on loan at the same club.

He scored four goals in 14 matches across all competitions in his debut season, before featuring only three times in the 2023/24 term as he sustained a long-term ankle and ligament injury against Orlando Pirates in December 2023.

Notably, his last Sundowns appearance dates back to December 2023, where he was afforded 45 minutes by then-head coach Rulani Mokwena in a 3-0 win over Cape Town Spurs.

With competition rife in the star-studded squad, Nasir was subsequently sent out on loan to cross town rivals and now-defunct SuperSport United in the 2024/25 campaign, but failed to make a single appearance.

The Ethiopia international was most recently shipped out on yet another loan to Motsepe Foundation Championship side University of Pretoria last season, where he also failed to established himself.

Now, he is set for a fresh start in his native country, having been announced as a new signing by Mechal Sports Club, who finished third in the Ethiopia Premier League last season.

Whether Nasir will rediscover the form that caught the attention of Sundowns remains to be seen, as he put pen to paper on a two-year deal that will keep him at the club until June 2028.
