Major League Soccer (MLS) outfit Chicago Fire have announced the marquee signing of prolific striker Robert Lewandowski on a free transfer.

The Poland national team all-time leading goal scorer was unattached after parting ways with Spanish giants FC Barcelona ahead of the expiry of his contract.

He brings an impeccable resume to Chicago with 629 goals and 159 assists in his illustrious club career where he made 869 appearances to date.

Lewandowski has won a host of major honours in Europe, including the UEFA Champions League, Bundesliga, La Liga, German and Spanish cups, among others.

Meanwhile, the former FC Bayern Munich talisman has netted 89 goals and provided 38 assists in 167 caps for his country, but is yet to win an international trophy.

Now, aged 37, he is set to spend the twilight years of his career in the United States of America, where he will be competing in the Eastern Conference of the MLS.

The legendary centre-forward will now share a dressing room with highly-rated Bafana Bafana defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi and winger Puso Dithejane.

However, the ex-Orlando Pirates stalwart could be set for a huge switch to one of Europe's top five league after a stellar 2026 FIFA World Cup showing.

Whether Mbokazi moves in the current window remains to be seen, with Nottingham Forest from the English Premier League reportedly going all out for his signature.
