Orlando Pirates CAFCL opponents appoint new coach

African Stars have announced the appointment of Gerald Guther as the club's new head coach ahead of their CAF Champions League tie against Orlando Pirates.

This comes after Ronny Kananelo abruptly left the Debmarine Namibia Premiership champions for struggling Betway Premiership outfit Marumo Gallants earlier this month.

He succeeded Phuti Mohafe at Bahlabane Ba Ntwa on the back of guiding African Stars to the second preliminary round of the prestigious CAF Champions League.

Kananelo masterminded a 2-0 win over AS Mangasport of Gabon in the return leg, which saw the Namibian giants advance via away goal rule after a 3-3 draw on aggregate.

Notably, African Stars are said to be exploring legal action against the former Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper, citing a breach of contract in his switch to Gallants.

The nine-time Namibian champions, meanwhile, are set to usher into a new era under CAF A License holder Guther, who previously coached the Namibian U20 national team.

“African Stars Football Club is pleased to announce the appointment of Gerald Guther as the club's new head coach,” read a club statement.

"Guther takes charge as the Stars prepare for the Premier League season and the highly anticipated CAF Champions League clash against Orlando Pirates.

"A new chapter begins. The mission continues.

Having hosted AS Mangasport at Lucas Moripe Stadium in the first preliminary round, African Stars are set to entertain Pirates at Botswana National Stadium next month.

With a lucrative spot in the group stages on the line, African Stars will then visit the South African champions at the Orlando Amstel Arena in the return leg.
