Panathinaikos: Rafael Benítez already under fire

Rafael Benítez is facing a turbulent spell at Panathinaikos FC. Hired last October on a record deal running until 2027, with an annual salary of €5 million, the Spanish coach is now under threat after a disappointing start to the season.

In the league, Panathinaikos sits in 5th place, trailing leaders Olympiakos FC by 14 points. The team will also need to deliver in the Europa League play-offs against Viktoria Plzen. The upcoming fixtures, including this weekend’s clash with OFI, could well decide his fate.

Critics have targeted his tactical approach, which some players deem too rigid. In the Greek media, the name Igor Biscan is already being floated as a potential replacement should Benítez be shown the door.
