Patrice Motsepe confirms the end of CHAN, 'a financial black hole'

The African Nations Championship (CHAN) is now a thing of the past. At a press conference held this Saturday, January 17 in Rabat, the president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, officially announced the end of the competition reserved for players competing in domestic leagues.

This decision, fully assumed by the South African leader, was justified on economic grounds.
“Our job is to make decisions that are in the best interests of African football. CHAN is a spectacle that causes us to lose money,” Motsepe stated, emphasizing that CAF needed to reconsider its priorities.

Patrice Motsepe also explained that the creation of the African Nations League, held annually, now renders CHAN obsolete: “With the African Nations League, there will no longer be a need for CHAN.”

The final edition of the tournament took place last summer in East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda). Morocco lifted the trophy, defeating Madagascar 3-2 in the final in Nairobi. With three titles (2018, 2020, 2024), the Atlas Lions remain the record holders of CHAN.
