Pep Guardiola compares Rayan Cherki to Lionel Messi after Manchester City win over Arsenal
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has drawn a striking comparison between rising French star Rayan Cherki and Lionel Messi praising the midfielder’s talent after his decisive performance in the 2-1 win over Arsenal on Sunday 19 April.
Cherki played a key role in City’s victory scoring his side’s opener and taking his tally to 10 goal this season while also contributing 13 assist in 44 appearance across all competitions.
Guardiola: “He reminds me of Messi”
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Guardiola did not hold back in his assessment of the 21 year old.
“Apart from Lionel Messi, Rayan Cherki is the most entertaining player I’ve coached. He reminds me of him” Guardiola said.
The City manager who worked closely with Messi during Barcelona’s dominant era, rarely makes such comparisons which underlines the impression Cherki has made since arriving at the club.
However, Guardiola also pointed to areas for improvement.
“Sometimes he frustrates me because he holds on to the ball too long and wants to show his qualities.. But his level of technical ability and composure in matches is unbelievable” he added.
Cherki responds with admiration
Cherki was quick to downplay the comparison, instead reinforcing his admiration for the Argentine legend.
“Whenever I get the chance, I watch Lionel Messi’s highlights on YouTube before matches.. He’s my idol. For me, he’s the greatest player of all time” he said.
