Pitso Mosimane explains shock Mbuthuma Bafana call-up

Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane has explained the rationale behind including Orlando Pirates striker Yanela Mbuthuma in his final squad for the 2027 Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers later this month.

The 24-year-old centre-forward has been under intense scrutiny from a section of the Bucs faithful dating from last season to the current campaign, owing to his recurring lack of cutting edge in the final third.

However, he has seemingly picked up form as he scored three goals and provided two assists in his last five appearances across all competitions for Pirates, which has somewhat seen criticism over his performances tone down.

Despite improved exploits in front of goals, his inclusion in the national team set-up has raised eyebrows, but the newly appointed Bafana boss has backed the former Richards Bay talisman to succeed at international level.

“Well, I don't know what other people are saying, and I don't know why people brand him as an enemy. I think he's a national team player, he scores goals for Orlando Pirates, I think you've seen him score few goals in Orlando Stadium,” said Mosimane.

"And yes, maybe he's not scoring as much as you want but he does score goals. He's got a physical presence also and he's hungry - give him a chance.

With nine matches played and five goal contributions to his name thus far this season, Mbuthuma will be eager to add to his tally when the defending Betway Premiership champions visit Marumo Gallants at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Sunday before the FIFA International break.

South Africa, meanwhile, are set to square off against Guinea on home soil, before facing Eritrea on a neutral venue away from home in the AFCON qualifiers and round up their fixtures with a friendly match against Egypt in Cairo.
