Portugal appoints a new head coach! (Official)

Eliminated prematurely from the 2026 World Cup, Portugal wasted no time and has appointed Jorge Jesus as head coach to kick off a new era.

Portugal didn’t wait long to close the Roberto Martínez chapter. Just days after bowing out to Spain in the Round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup, the Portuguese Football Federation made it official: Jorge Jesus will lead the Seleção moving forward.

Free since the end of his stint at Al-Nassr, the 71-year-old tactician is said to have reached a "full agreement" with Portuguese officials. His experience at Benfica, Sporting, Flamengo, and Fenerbahçe was a major factor in the decision—along with his familiarity with Cristiano Ronaldo.

However, the challenge ahead is massive. Jorge Jesus must revive a squad stung by their early World Cup exit and prepare for Euro 2028, as well as the 2030 World Cup, which will be partially hosted in Portugal.
