Portugal: Federation may sanction Cristiano Ronaldo
Cristiano Ronaldo could face disciplinary sanctions after leaving the Portugal training camp. According to the Lusa news agency, the regulations of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) provide for a suspension of one to six months in the event of an unjustified abandonment of the national team.
A suspension provided for in the regulations
Article 160 of the FPF disciplinary regulations provides for sanctions against players who, after being called up, abandon or miss without justification training sessions, matches or national team activities. The suspension can range from one to six months.
For professional players, a fine of five to ten units of account is also provided for, equivalent to approximately €500 to €1,000 according to the amounts reported by Lusa. The regulations also mention an automatic preventive suspension in the event of an absence or abandonment.
Ronaldo’s departure sparks debate
Aged 41, the Portuguese captain left the training camp before the Nations League matches against Denmark and Norway. This situation arose after Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway, during which Ronaldo did not come on. The forward then left the pitch without joining his teammates to thank the Portuguese supporters.
The following day, he trained in the gym at the national team’s hotel before leaving the training camp. These events raised questions about the reasons for his departure and the action the federation might take in the matter. The question now is whether the FPF will consider Ronaldo’s departure an offense warranting disciplinary proceedings.
