Portugal: Jorge Jesus makes a promise about Cristiano Ronaldo!
Jorge Jesus is refusing for now to fuel the Cristiano Ronaldo saga, but promises to speak publicly about the matter after the international break.
The Cristiano Ronaldo saga continues to rock Portugal. Twenty-four hours after his captain unexpectedly left the training camp in Copenhagen, Jorge Jesus was again questioned about the situation just minutes before the Nations League match against Denmark.
Speaking to SPORT TV, the 72-year-old manager chose to postpone the explanations until the end of this international window.
“Then, we will talk about this matter”
“For now, we have one match, then another at the Dragão against Norway on 4 October. Then, we will talk about this matter without avoiding it. But at the moment, the matter is closed.”
Jorge Jesus is therefore refusing to go into detail immediately, with his team still due to play two important matches. Portugal will first face Denmark this Thursday before taking on Norway at the Dragão Stadium on Sunday.
Jesus maintains his respect for Ronaldo
Despite the obvious tension between the two men, the Portuguese manager was keen to reiterate the special status of the five-time Ballon d’Or winner: “Cristiano Ronaldo is a symbol and a figure, and that is not in question.”
The statement comes after several turbulent days. Ronaldo remained on the bench for the entire 2-1 victory in Norway, a decision he reportedly took very badly. Jorge Jesus subsequently publicly stood by his choice while denying that there had been any major incident with his captain.
Ronaldo had promised to “tell the truth”
On Wednesday evening, Cristiano Ronaldo himself confirmed his departure from the training camp. In his message, the striker explained that he had made his decision after the manager’s press conference and a conversation with Pedro Proença, president of the Portuguese Football Federation.
“In due course, I will tell all Portuguese people the truth about the reasons behind my departure from the national team.”
Both sides are therefore now promising to speak at greater length. In the meantime, Portugal must continue its Nations League campaign without its historic captain, whose international future remains the subject of widespread speculation.
