Roberto Martinez is no longer the head coach of Portugal.

Just two days after the Selecção das Quinas were knocked out by Spain (1-0) in the Round of 16 at this 2026 World Cup, the Portuguese federation confirmed the departure of the Spanish manager. He had already announced his exit on Monday evening. Jorge Jesus is the leading candidate to take over on the Portugal bench.

"The contract between the FPF and the national coach ended this Wednesday. The Portuguese Football Federation announces that the contractual relationship with national coach Roberto Martinez and his technical staff has officially come to an end this Wednesday. The Portuguese Football Federation thanks Roberto Martinez and his technical team for all their professionalism over the past three and a half years—a period marked by winning the Nations League in 2025—as well as for their dedication, professionalism, and commitment to the project, and for the respect he always showed towards the country and Portuguese football. The president of the Portuguese Football Federation is already working on hiring the next national coach, with the aim of continuing to promote the ambition and winning culture that must always guide the national team in every competition they play." the Portuguese national team announced.
