Premier League: Tottenham Fall Back into Old Habits

Tottenham are already facing a worrying start to the season. After their heavy 3-0 defeat at Brentford on the opening day, the Spurs suffered another loss on Saturday, this time at home against Newcastle (0-2), leaving them without a single point or goal after two matchdays.

The change of manager has therefore not been enough to immediately get Tottenham back on track. In his first home league match, Roberto De Zerbi’s side once again struggled offensively and lost to Newcastle without managing to find the back of the net.

The previous week, Tottenham had already suffered a heavy defeat away at Brentford. Two matches, two defeats, five goals conceded and, above all, no goals scored: the Spurs’ record is particularly concerning.

A Chilling Statistic

This start to the season has already entered the club’s history. Tottenham have lost their opening two league matches without scoring for the first time since the 1974-75 season.

The Spurs had also not lost their first two league games for 15 years. But it is their attacking inefficiency that stands out most: Tottenham had not started a Premier League season without scoring in either of their first two matches since 1992-93.

£332 Million Spent… for Zero Points

This start is all the more surprising given Tottenham’s significant investment during the summer transfer window. The London club reportedly spent around £332 million to strengthen their squad.

So far, the return on that investment has been far from convincing: two matches, two defeats and no points.

The contrast between the club’s ambitions and the reality on the pitch is striking. After battling against relegation last season, Tottenham already appear to be returning to some of the difficulties that have plagued them in the past.

De Zerbi Already Under Pressure

Appointed to the bench with the task of reviving the Spurs, Roberto De Zerbi will now have to find solutions quickly. His team have conceded five goals in two matches and scored none.

The league table could also become a concern very quickly. With zero points and a -5 goal difference, Tottenham are currently bottom of the Premier League.

The season is still long, but the message sent by these opening two matchdays is particularly alarming. Tottenham will need to respond quickly to prevent the demons of last season from haunting another campaign.
