Ramiz Zerrouki in the eye of the storm
Ramiz Zerrouki's recent story is a textbook example of how quickly fortunes can change in modern football. Once a key figure at Feyenoord, the Algerian midfielder saw his status unravel from the second half of the 2024/2025 season. Sidelined on the pitch and deemed surplus to requirements, he left Rotterdam on loan to Twente in the summer transfer window—a move intended to revive his career, but so far, it hasn’t delivered. In the Netherlands, his performances have struggled to impress, drawing a barrage of criticism, especially from television pundits. Facing the mounting pressure, Zerrouki decided to respond:
“People have every right to be critical, but sometimes it goes too far. Individuals who have never achieved anything in their lives sit on a talk show and think they can say whatever they want.”
A worrying dip in form for club and country
If things look shaky at club level, Zerrouki's position with the national team is equally uncertain. His recent outings for the Greens, especially against Botswana and Guinea during the September international break, were widely considered below par. His lack of impact and consistency has sparked intense criticism, much of it seen as justified by pundits. Early signals from the technical staff suggest Vladimir Petkovic may omit Zerrouki from the October training camp. Such an absence would confirm his slide down the pecking order, just as Algeria looks to bolster its midfield ahead of crucial fixtures. The former Feyenoord mainstay, once untouchable, now faces a monumental challenge: proving he still belongs at the top level.
