Real Madrid: controversy against Espanyol Barcelona, José Mourinho calls in Vinicius Jr

After a turbulent season opener for Vinicius Jr, José Mourinho held a private talk with the Brazilian star.

Last Saturday, Real Madrid kicked off their campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory away at Espanyol. It was a narrow win for José Mourinho’s squad, in a match once again overshadowed by controversy surrounding Vinicius Jr, whose conduct was the talk of the game. Not only did the Brazilian deliver a lackluster performance, he also clashed with several Espanyol players—though it must be noted he was provoked as well.

On Monday, Marca reported that José Mourinho spoke with Vinicius Jr. Was it to reprimand him? Not at all. Instead, Mourinho assured him of unwavering support, showing the player he’ll always have his back. The Portuguese manager knows that the No. 7 for Los Blancos needs to better control his emotions and avoid reacting to provocations, and he’s determined to help him do just that.

At the same time, the Special One considers Vinicius Jr indispensable to his side and is a big admirer of the Flamengo academy product. The Brazilian perfectly embodies what Mourinho wants in his team: an aggressive, ambitious and competitive squad.
