On Saturday evening, Real Madrid secured a bittersweet victory at home, at the Santiago Bernabéu. After the match, José Mourinho decided not to attend the press conference.

Although they won their match against Villarreal last night, Los Merengues nevertheless lost Vinícius Jr. The Brazilian was sent off for pulling Saliba's hair at the start of the move that led to his goal being disallowed. The decision provoked the fury of the Real Madrid players and their coach, José Mourinho.

Afterwards, the Special One did not attend the press conference. According to revelations from sources within the club and his entourage who were interviewed by The Athletic, José Mourinho made this decision “because he wants to be on the bench against Sevilla and Barcelona”. A way to avoid heavy sanctions for clumsy remarks.

Vinicius Jr's apology

After being sent off against Villarreal for pulling Nathan Saliba's hair, Vinicius Jr apologised to Real Madrid and its supporters on Instagram several hours later. “The joy continues… Sorry to my team and the supporters,” wrote the Brazilian winger. Coming on in the second half, Vini thought he had scored the second goal before VAR intervened to flag his foul and prompt the referee to send him off directly.

Vinicius's mea culpa was also accompanied by a new message denouncing the refereeing treatment he believes he receives. “And the one who always gets a yellow and a red is Vinicius, what a disgrace,” read the montage reposted by the Madrid player.
