Rohr’s Bold Mission: Benin Targets South Africa as Nigeria Gears Up for War

Head coach of Benin Republic, Gernot Rohr's expressed his determination ahead of his team’s must win clash against group C leaders South Africa in the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers Tuesday.

Rohr’s Expectations

Speaking ahead of the game, the former Super Eagles coach stated:

“The group's very close with South Africa 2 points ahead of us and three more than Rwanda. Nigeria's also secured their 1st win. We must beat South Africa because every team's to take their chances in this group”.

Rohr who coached Nigeria for over five years, also suggested that his former players in the Super Eagles are rooting for his team to defeat South Africa.

Group C Standings and Key Fixtures

South Africa currently tops Group C with 10 points followed by Benin with 8 and Rwanda with 7. Nigeria who secured vital 2 - 0 win over Rwanda, sits in 4th place. A win for Benin would propel them to the top of the table.

Meanwhile Nigeria will host Zimbabwe in Uyo with Victor Osimhen warning that the Super Eagles remaining matches are “wars” that they must fight to win. Osimhen, fresh off brace against Rwanda emphasized the team’s determination to qualify.

Nigeria moved to 4th place in Group C with 6 points, trailing South Africa 10, Benin 8 and Rwanda (7). With South Africa & Benin facing off, the Super Eagles have opportunity to close the gap with win over Zimbabwe.

Nigeria's unbeaten in 6 previous meetings with Zimbabwe, winning four and drawing 2. However their last 2 encounters ended in draws including the first leg match in the ongoing qualifiers.

With Osimhen back, Nigeria's expected to have too much firepower for Zimbabwe.
