Rulani Mokwena guided Pyramids FC to a hard-fought 1-0 win over El Merriekh Bentiu in the first leg of their CAF Champions League second round clash.

The 2025 African champions broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute, thanks to Egyptian midfielder Mahmoud Saber.

Pyramids went on to suffer a numerical disadvantage as Mahmoud Marei received his marching orders one minute from time.

Mokwena's men walked away with the all-important crucial away goal, forcing the South Sudan outfit to dig deep in the return leg in Cairo next week.

Notably, it was Pyramids' 10th consecutive victory across all competitions since the South African mentor took over the reins in July, replacing Krunoslav Jurcic.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns boss has been tasked with winning the Champions League, Egyptian Premier League and domestic cups.

Whether Mokwena will meet the objectives set by the club's hierarchy remains to be seen, with North African teams notorious for being trigger-happy.

Pyramids return to action with a visit to Tala'ea El Gaish in the league, as they look to maintain their unbeaten run and consolidate the top spot.
