Aston Villa is exploring the possibility of signing Sergio Ramos

At the age of 40, Sergio Ramos appears to be still attracting the attention of European clubs. Following a long career in which he achieved everything with both his clubs and the Spanish national team, he now seems poised for a new chapter in his life.

Aston Villa has been linked with Ramos; as he has been a free agent since leaving the Mexican club Monterrey last December, the club would only need to reach a personal agreement with him.

Aston Villa does not view signing Ramos as a sentimental move, but rather as a necessary step to strengthen key positions within the squad.

Villa's move stems as much from necessity as from romance: Unai Emery's side, still without a win after a nightmare start to the season, have been struck by long-term injuries to Pau Torres and Ian Maatsen, leaving the squad desperately short of defensive experience.

And experience is something Ramos possesses in absurd abundance: four Champions League titles and a record number of appearances for Real Madrid, a World Cup and two European Championships with Spain, and later spells at PSG, Sevilla and Monterrey, where he captained the side and featured at the expanded Club World Cup before his contract expired last December. Rather than retire, the veteran spent 2026 exploring other avenues, including an attempt with an investment group to buy a controlling stake in his beloved Sevilla, but the boots were never hung up.
