South Africa: Federation denies rumors of Hugo Broos departure

The South African Football Association (SAFA) has firmly denied reports suggesting Hugo Broos is leaving. The federation confirmed that the Belgian coach remains in charge of Bafana Bafana and that rumors about his resignation are completely unfounded.

SAFA points out that this is not the first time Hugo Broos has been rumored to leave following a strong run by South Africa in a major tournament. In March 2024, just weeks after clinching third place at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, he was already linked to the Tunisian national team, though that move never materialized.

These rumors have surfaced shortly after Bafana Bafana’s return from the 2026 World Cup, where the team achieved the best performance in its history. Under Broos’s guidance, South Africa reached the last 16 for the first time ever, thanks in particular to a 1-0 victory over South Korea in their final group stage match in Monterrey, Mexico.

The federation stated that Hugo Broos is currently in Belgium for a short break. He is set to return to South Africa later this month to resume his duties as head coach of the national team.

With this statement, SAFA aims to put an end to speculation and reaffirms that the Belgian tactician remains fully committed to his project with Bafana Bafana.
